Kansas City has a great history of fostering phenomenal quarterbacks and the legacy of which is rightly upheld by the current gunslinger, Patrick Mahomes. A few decades ago, precisely in 1962, when Len Dawson entered the City (then Dallas Texans) expectations were sky high. Fortunately, he was able to live up to the aspirations and script history with his art of slinging. But today, the legendary signal-caller is facing a hard time and is admitted to hospice care.

The 87-year-old is battling prostate cancer which he was diagnosed with back in 1991. He was the same man who led the franchise to its first Super Bowl win in 1970. These events occurred even before the AFL-NFL merger happened; however, he played a significant role in encouraging both sides to come to an agreement and what we call today’s National Football League. Since his health condition deteriorated, the veteran moved to hospice care.

Dawson played for 14 seasons with the Dallas Texans(today’s Chiefs), where he threw for 28,507 yards and became the leader in passing yards, touchdowns, and wins.

Back in 1964, he scripted the record for most touchdowns in a single season. He registered 30 touchdowns in 14 games that year and was unbroken till 2018 before a Texas Tech product entered the gridiron. Certainly, the record was single-handedly broken by Patrick Mahomes after 54 years.

However, the legend is still undisputed; in terms of career yardages, touchdowns, and wins for the franchise. The signal-caller was elected to the Pro-football hall of fame in 1987, and in 2012 he was honored with the Hall’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award.

While it took Dawson 14 games to create a record, Patrick Mahomes took only ten games to break it. His 31st touchdown came with a victory against the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. The match was held at Arrowhead Stadium and the legend was happy to know the record was broken by the youngster.

Although Dawson didn’t have much sentimental value regarding the record, not to mention he did that unknowingly, the veteran did appreciate Patrick Mahomes for his style. “I didn’t even know it was (still) there; I had no idea until the last week or so. It really wasn’t in my thoughts,” he said, laughing and adding, “Hey, it was going to be overcome… It’s just as well it’s now: He’s a heck of a player. As they say, records are made to be broken.” he explained.

Currently, Mahomes is gearing up to play in his sixth NFL season. The 26-year-old already boasts a Super Bowl title and four Pro Bowl selections. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain consistency moving ahead.
