Yet another controversy is up in the National Football League. The matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Cleveland Browns on October 15, 2023, was not simple. There was a moment that raised controversy and several opinions. The safety of the 49ers, Tashaun Gipson, was flagged for ‘unnecessary roughness’ against Browns’ Elijah Moore in the third round.

The penalty was, however, controversial since replays indicated that, indeed, Gipson did all according to the books, such as hitting the ball first and so forth. The call came under severe criticism from many fans and analysts; furthermore, Gipson himself thinks that he avoided helmet-to-helmet contact deliberately. And GM John Lynch supported the safety of the matter.

On October 20, 2023, David Lombardi on X posted General Manager Lynch’s comment on the controversy. Lombardi updated, “49ers GM John Lynch said on KNBR that Tashaun Gipson Sr.’s personal foul penalty at Cleveland could actually be used as teach tape for how to legally administer that type of hit.” Lynch stated, “I thought Gip did a great job there. I’ll leave it at that.”

Gipson reported that he did not receive any communication from the NFL regarding the penalty – whether they are now admitting a mistake in issuing such a penalty or if there will be a fine coming his way. The veteran also said that his peers reached out to him about the matter. They also encouraged him after this play circulated on social media.

Tashaun Gipson put forward his take on the penalty

The safety of the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday said, “It’s just unfortunate. Things like this change the momentum of games. You don’t get an apology letter, and you don’t get a win back. You don’t get anything. Hey, bad call, move on from it. And my team is 5-1 instead of 6-0.”

He continued that there is not much he would really change. It is easy to see on replay when a ball is moving slowly, and he does not know if he will catch the ball. “Playing football is all about being reactive,” he stated. What is your take on the controversy?
