Nintendo Switch Takes the Sales Crown Despite New-Gen Console Launch From PlayStation and Xbox

November saw the gaming console titans, Sony and Xbox clash with the launch of their new-gen consoles. Almost a month after the launch, reports have come in showing how each console fared in the market. However, even with the launch of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, a surprise performer has taken the crown for the most units sold.
Nintendo Switch towered over the heavyweights in sales for the year. Nonetheless, PlayStation and Xbox set new records in November, reports from industry tracking firm The NPD Group suggest. The overall sales of video game hardware was another record in the month of November.
“Consumers spent a November record $1.4 billion on new video game hardware, an increase of 58% when compared to a year ago,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said.

The figures might be huge, but they certainly are not surprising. It is not everyday new-gen consoles with extremely high specifications are released. Therefore, the PlayStation and Xbox sales are the main contributing factors to this huge revenue.
The year to date hardware spending totaled to $4 billion. This figure is 34% higher than the previous year.

The spot for the top console of the year is contradictorily shared by both PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The Switch overtook PS5 in the number of units sold this year. While the PS5 took the spot for the most hardware sold in November, the Switch remains the best-selling hardware platform in units sold for a record 24 consecutive months.

However, PlayStation still generated more revenue from its sales than the Switch. The reason being the cost of the hardware. The Switch and the Switch Lite sell for $300 and $200, respectively. On the other hand, PS5’s standard edition and the digital edition will set back a consumer by $500 and $400, respectively.

PS5 also took home the crown for the highest launch month sales in U.S. history, breaking the record previously held by PS4. Not just the console, Sony’s state-of-the-art DualSense controller achieved the highest launch month sales ever for a gamepad.
Xbox needs to step up its game because currently, its rivals are far ahead in the race to be the biggest console gaming giant.
