In today’s world, social media is a huge tool for free speech. People can put out their opinions on the public domain for people to see. But for Former World No.1 Rafael Nadal, it has been a trouble. Back in April this year, Nadal had tweeted pointing out the mishaps that led to over 200000 COVID-19 cases and 26000 deaths at that time in Spain. This was seen by many as an act against the government of Spain and Nadal was subjected to a lot of negative comments.

“I never spoke ill of a government” – Rafael Nadal
And now after 4 months, Rafa spoke about the whole social media scene and what he actually thinks happened. In an interview with GQ, Nadal said that like any citizen he has the right to express his opinion on various matters concerning Spain.
“I am from another era, I was not born with social networks nor have I grown up with them, I live a little outside of all that, I promise you that I do not have the perception of that criticism. I am a Spanish citizen like any other, I am an athlete like others are engineers or electricians, and I have the same right to express my opinion as any other citizen.” Nadal said
He indicated that a lot of people try to make controversies out of every statement. Rafa cleared that he never spoke ill of the government rather said the truth about what was happening in his country.

“What I do tell you is that I am not going to enter into the radicalization that many intend to implant in this society, in which they try to make controversy with everything. I never spoke ill of a government, I expressed an opinion that I believed at that time and the truth is that I expressed it with the utmost respect. What happens is that today absolutely nothing can be said, because unfortunately, they are radicalizing us. I am not interested in participating in this circus of hypocrisy and radicalization.” Nadal clarified
Nadal doesn’t want to add anything more to the baseless controversy. Calling it a circus of hypocrisy and radicalization. Rafa won’t pay much attention to all the small talk and rather focus on the upcoming clay tournaments.
