“Not Sure I Deserve To Play”: Gutted Andy Murray Bows Out of Davis Cup 2021 After Defeat at Indian Wells

British tennis star Andy Murray was recently competing in the Indian Wells Masters. He was having a great run until he came across German star, Alexander Zverev. The former World No. 1 went down in straight sets in the Round of 32. However, he made an interesting revelation after his exit from the event.
After the loss, Andy Murray declared that he will not be representing Great Britain in the Davis Cup 2021. He feels he has already contributed a lot for his nation. During the 2019 season, while competing in the finals of the Davis Cup, the three-time Grand Slam champion ended up injuring himself and, due to that, missed the Australian Open which takes place early in the season.

The 34-year-old player stated, “I’ve given a lot to the Davis Cup, and sometimes to my own detriment physically. The same thing happened last time I played Davis Cup at the end of 2019. I know there was Coronavirus, but I was struggling with that really up until September time the following year.”

The injury he suffered during the Davis Cup in 2019 took a while for it to recover. He was struggling until September. Usually, by September, all the four Grand Slam events are concluded; however, the year’s calendar was affected by the Coronavirus. Andy feels he should be left out, and instead, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans should be placed above him due to their impressive seasons.
The former Olympic gold medalist added, “I also don’t feel right now I would be playing, either,” he said. “Obviously that would be up to Leon, but I’m not sure I deserve to play in that team. Cam [Norrie] and Dan [Evans] have had a great year. Liam Broady’s in and around the top 100 now and we’ve got very strong doubles as well.”
