“That’s Going to Be a Big Game”- Alex Morgan on USWNT Facing Old Rivals Sweden at Tokyo Olympics 2021

The USWNT is headed to Tokyo in search of the coveted Gold medal, and being the favorites to win it, the players know the task ahead of them. Having already won the world cup, the team is heavily pitted to become only the fourth squad in history to win the Olympic Gold with the World Cup. 

Alex Morgan was part of the team that won the Olympic Gold in London 2012 and also a key player in the 2015 World Cup triumph. The same squad was all set to win the gold medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 but was halted by a stubborn Swedish defense, that held off the attack long enough to force the game into a penalty shoutout that they ended up winning.

Fans may recall the outrage that followed the match with severe criticism coming from then US goalkeeper Hope Solo directed towards the opponents. Those memories may still be fresh in the minds of the players as they head on to Tokyo, especially since they face the old foes to kick off their campaign. 

Alex Morgan is aware of Sweden’s strength in the game

Speaking on Good Morning America, Alex Morgan opened up on facing the team that kicked them out of the 2016 Olympics in the quarterfinals and the camp gun in general.

“When you have 12 teams in an Olympics in comparison to a World Cup where you have double that amount of teams, I think every single team is going to be difficult,” she said. “But we seem to always find ourselves playing Sweden in every major tournament. … Last Olympics they actually kicked us out of Rio. So that’s going to be a big game.”

It will certainly be a big game since there’ll be everything to play for. Sweden was able to hold the USWNT to a 1-1 draw in Rio 5 years ago, defending to the absolute brink of the line. The penalty shootout that ensued saw the Swedes shock the USA, who were favorites to win the gold.

The USWNT has a chance now to win its 5th Olympic Gold medal in Tokyo. Alex Morgan will be joined by capable attackers such as Megan Rapinoe, Christen Press, and Tobin Heath not to mention the Mewis sisters, Rose Lavelle, and an airtight defense. It will certainly be all-in for the team in their pursuit of Olympic Gold.
