US Olympic Swimming Gold Medalist Kathleen Baker Announces Engagement to US Marine Corps Officer

The Tokyo Olympics is right around the corner and swimming will be one of the main areas of focus. The United States of America has named a strong contingent for this year’s Olympics and veteran swimmer Kathleen Baker missed out on a spot. On the other hand, Baker recently announced delightful news regarding her personal life.
Baker was a very popular name in the mid-2010s. She won two medals in the 2016 Rio Olympics including one gold. And recently, the 24-year-old announced her engagement to Sean Dowling, a United States Marine Corps officer.

Kathleen Baker posed with the ring after Downling’s proposal and the couple celebrated it in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. “WOAH WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!!!! Love me some Sean,” Baker wrote on her Instagram post.

Baker broke through the limelight at the 2016 Rio Olympics when she picked up a silver in the 100m backstroke event and a gold in women’s 4×100 medley relay. She quickly established herself as one of the top swimmers in the nation and held the 100m backstroke world record for roughly a year.

Besides winning Olympic medals and World Championships, Kathleen Baker also dominated NCAA tournaments during her time at the University of California, Berkeley. Baker won six medals in two NCAA championships between 2017 and 2018.
She dominated the 100, 200 back, and the 200IM events. Her fiance Sean Dowling is an athlete too, having played for Vanderbilt from 2013 to 2016. Dowling then joined the United States Marine Corps. He followed in the footsteps of both his parents as well as his paternal grandfather.

Is Baker going to Tokyo Olympics 2020?
Kathleen Baker represented the USA at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but will unfortunately not be going to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Baker posted 58.75 in the final of the 100m backstroke in Rio and broke a personal record which she had never come close to before.

Baker then broke the 100m backstroke world record at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships by clocking a 58:00 in Tokyo, Japan. It was then broken by Regan Smith in the 2019 World Championships with a 57.57.
