Katie Ledecky is a name that most fans who follow swimming already know. And why wouldn’t they? She has clinched fourteen Olympic medals and twenty-one gold medals at the World Championships! She’s practically the queen of 200 m and 1500 m freestyle. With 9 Olympic gold medals in her bag, she is the first American Female Swimmer to win an Individual Event in Three Straight Olympics. What is Katie Ledecky’s Ethnicity? 

Katie Ledecky has a very rich heritage and ethnicity because of her parents. She is of Czech, Irish, and Jewish ancestry. Her paternal grandfather, Jaromír Ledecký, immigrated from Czechoslovakia to the U.S. in 1947.

Her mother, Mary Gen (née Hagan), is of Irish descent. Her paternal grandmother, Berta Ruth Greenwald, was Jewish. She represents America whenever she’s competing on an international level.

Katie’s paternal grandfather was Jaromír “Jerry” Ledecký (the son of Jaroslav Ledecky and Jarmila Horčičková). Jaromir was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and was an economist. He came to the U.S. in 1947. He was the son of Josef Ledecky and Anna Rebcová.

What is Katie Ledecky’s Religion? 

Katie is Roman Catholic by religion. Though she has Jewish heritage through her paternal grandmother, Ledecky was raised Catholic and attended Catholic schools. She has spoken publicly about how her Catholic faith plays a central role in her life and athletic career.

It’s a big part of who I am and how I’ve made it here,” Ledecky said of her Catholic faith to the Register. This was after she broke her world record in the 800-meter freestyle event on Aug. 12. She had discussed her Olympic achievements, her spiritual alignment, and her academic studies in college during this interview. She said, “I think the beauty of Catholicism is its consistency through both successes and difficulties. I’ve counted on my faith to give me strength through both training and competition — but also in school, with my family, and everyday life. So while my goals in the pool have changed, my faith remains something that’s consistent and something I can always rely on.”
