Who Are Claire Curzan’s Parents?

Claire’s parents are Tracy Curzan and Dr. Mark Curzan, an orthopedic surgeon. Tracy played soccer at Harvard, showing the family’s strong athletic roots. She was a standout player even in high school. The gene clearly runs deep: Claire’s brother, Sean, was a competitive swimmer during his school years and now works as a coach.

Claire’s swimming career from a young age was supported by her family, driving her to practices, managing academics, and sports. “She played a lot of sports early on; she was a kid who tried it all. She ended up being good at both dance and swimming,” says Dr. Curzan. “Around age 10 or 11, her dance coach said she needed to choose a sport with which to get serious, and Claire chose swimming.”

Dr. Curzan was a strong athlete growing up, swimming competitively and playing water polo. Claire’s mom, Tracy, played soccer at Harvard, and their youngest daughter, Kate, is following in her footsteps, making a career in soccer!

Where Is Claire Curzan From?

Claire is from Cary, North Carolina. She trained with the TAC Titans swim club. North Carolina’s strong swim programs helped nurture her Olympic-level talent. She is currently a swimmer at the University of Virginia. She transferred to UVA from Stanford University in August 2023. She is also a member of the US National Swim Team and competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Curzan qualified for her first Olympic team at the age of 16, and in the summer of 2022, she won five medals at the World Championships. However, when she returned to compete in 2024, she struggled at the U.S. Olympic Trials. She finished out of contention, placing fourth in the 100 butterfly—an event in which she had previously qualified for the team three years earlier—and eighth in the 100 backstroke. In the 200 backstroke final, Curzan held second place for most of the race, but Phoebe Bacon overtook her in the final length, finishing just 7-hundredths of a second ahead and securing the No. 2 spot on the U.S. team.

She temporarily retreated from the sport and returned to Charlottesville, VA., in mid-August, “extremely out of shape.” However, that rest was a good decision because she returned stronger.

Where Did Claire Curzan Go to High School?

Claire attended Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was a standout student-athlete, breaking national age-group records. She committed to Stanford University to pursue NCAA swimming and academics.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist achieved remarkable success during her time in school. She was a four-year member of the swim team and was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer for three of those years at the State Championship Meet. In her senior year, she set the all-classification meet records in both the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke, becoming the first female swimmer to complete both events in under 50 seconds.

Additionally, she established multiple new NFHS records in those categories. Her accomplishments also include sweeping the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke events at the state championships, earning a total of eight state titles.
