Naturally, since Gretchen’s mother was a collegiate swimmer, she could give her daughter the best guidance. Alex, Gretchen’s sister and the latter grew up in a family with strong bonds and a history in swimming. “They broke so many American and NCAA records. Alex has the most swimming titles in ACC history. We’re just hoping all the stars align for them and it does happen,” said Glynis to WSMV4.

“The whole thing seems a little surreal,” said Robert. “We still think back to when they were young, swimming. A lot of commitment on their part, and it’s just been great.”

The girls each piled up trophies for the University of Virginia, as well as some in international competitions.

Gretchen’s dad is a Graduate of the University of Tennessee; he supports the athletic and academic progress of his daughters.

He sacrificed a lot to see his daughters successful—moving from Connecticut to Tennessee to support their swim training. He also supports both daughters through trials and international competitions.
He also made frequent eight-hour drives from Nashville to Charlottesville after their oldest daughter chose to attend the University of Virginia.

Gretchen Walsh, just a year and a half younger than her Olympian sister Alex, made waves by becoming the youngest swimmer to qualify for the 2016 US Olympic Trials when she was only 13. Their mother, Glynis, also revealed that Gretchen was the more locked-in sister when it came to swimming.

She said, “Every morning, Gretchen is the first one up. She eats her breakfast, gets her stuff ready to go to school, and then she’s waiting on Alex. Alex kind of rolls downstairs, eats quickly, and they go to an all-girls school, so her hair is a mess, and they just kind of walk out the door. Gretchen is the one who keeps her on schedule for school and probably for swim practice”.
