Entering a tournament ranked outside the Top 100, many would say Phil Mickelson never stood a chance. But following a marvelous display across four days, he beat all odds to win the 2021 PGA Championship by two strokes. He rolled back the years to claim his first Major triumph since 2013. And along with it, he also broke a few records.

The 50-year-old became the oldest player to win a Major in golfing history. He surpassed Julius Boros, who won the 1968 PGA Championship at the age 48. The world number 115 Mickelson also became the lowest ranked champion at a Major since Shaun Micheel won the 2003 PGA Championship as the world number 169.

Finally, he also became only the fourth golfer in PGA TOUR history to record a win in four different decades. His first win came as a junior at the 1991 Northern Telecom Open. And four decades later, he has still got it. With this win, he joins an exclusive club of Sam Snead, Raymond Floyd and Davis Love III.

After being written off by critics and rivals, Mickelson proved them wrong in the best way with this win. It is his second PGA championship win. The first one came back in 2005 and he had to wait 16 years to get his second. One could argue this is his most iconic triumph at a Major.

Phil Mickelson: Form is temporary, class is permanent

With a final round of 73, Mickelson successfully held off Louis Oosthuizen and Brooks Koepka, at Kiawah Island. As he sank his final hole, the crowd roared in joy while the commentators exclaimed, “Phil defeats Father Time!”

“This is just an incredible feeling because I just believed that it was possible but yet everything was saying it wasn’t,” Mickelson said after the win. “I hope that others find that inspiration. It might take a little extra work, a little bit harder effort to maintain physically or maintain the skills, but gosh, is it worth it in the end.”

The left-hander’s triumph could also help him make a Ryder Cup return. U.S. captain Steve Stricker will now keep an eye out to see if Mickelson is good enough for their 12-man team. He hasn’t made an appearance since 2018, and this could the year he makes a comeback.
