Olympic Silver Medalist Rory Sabbatini in High Danger of Losing PGA Tour Status Next Season

Rory Sabbatini emphatically won the silver medal in the men’s golf event at Tokyo Olympics 2020. He scored an unfathomable -10 on the final day and made a sudden upheaval on the leaderboard. But at the moment, the Slovakian is in danger of missing out on the PGA Tour’s 2021-22 season as he would need a miracle to keep his chances alive and maintain status for the next year on the tour.
Sabbatini is 138th on the FedExCup standings. He is currently in Slovakia with his family, which means he is not in the field for this week’s World Golf Championship in Memphis. Moreover, he is also not in the opposite-field event, the Barracuda Championship.

So, while he celebrates his silver medal with his family, Sabbatini is all set to lose crucial FedEx Cup points. And now Sabbatini has only a week remaining to get into the playoffs with the top 125 players. And with him missing the event this week has made it a strenuous task for the Slovakian.
However, Sabbatini will enter the next week’s Wyndham Championship in a final attempt to get into the top 125. But he would need to bring in some magical performance similar to his final round at Tokyo that secured him a silver. He needs to post a mighty finish to make a jump from high 130s or low 140s up into the top 125.

Can Rory Sabbatini achieve the PGA Tour status even if he ranks below 125?
Yes, there are multiple ways through which Sabbatini can get the PGA Tour status even after missing the top 125 rankings. Firstly, he could go down and play the Korn Ferry Tour finals to achieve PGA Tour status. So there might be an Olympic silver medalist in the Korn Ferry Tour this month.

But still, there are few more ways for Sabbatini to keep his status on the PGA Tour. He is 29th on the all-time PGA Tour career money list with $35,193,189 in earnings. So, he has one time top-50 PGA Tour money exemption which he can use for the next season. Additionally, with 360 cuts made in his career, he can opt for the recently created “300 career made cut” exemption.

Moreover, there may also be increased sponsor exemption opportunities given his International status and an Olympic silver medal. So it is clear that even if he misses the top 125 FedEx Cup rankings, he has plenty of other avenues to get into the PGA Tour for the next season.

But Sabbatini might even opt out of playing on the PGA Tour next season. As he had said earlier, he may be thinking of spending some time in Slovakia to train the junior golfers.
