LONDON (Reuters) – Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole is recovering after suffering kidney failure this year, he told the Premier League club’s website on Wednesday. Cole, 44, had been due to play a charity match at Old Trafford on Nov. 14 but has been forced to pull out due to his illness. “In June of this year I suffered kidney failure, caused as a result of contracting an airborne virus and I have been under medical care ever since,” Cole said in a statement. Cole spent three weeks in hospital undergoing a kidney biopsy and has been unable to work since. “I am on a course of medication including some very strong steroids which has led to the change in my appearance,” he added. “We have been through some dark days. However, the good news is that I am feeling better as each day passes and the consultant is hopeful that I will make a full recovery by next spring.” Cole, who won five Premier League winners’ medals and the 1999 Champions League during his six years at Old Trafford, will continue in his role as a Manchester United Ambassador. He made his name at Newcastle United before joining Manchester United in 1995 and played 15 times for England. Cole scored 187 Premier League goals during his career, joint second on the all-time list with Wayne Rooney behind former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer. <strong>Brief History</strong>

Manchester United is regarded as one of the oldest football clubs in the Premier League. The team was formed in 1878, but under the name?Newton Heath LYR Football Club. It was only in 1902 that it was officially named Manchester United.

The Red Devils are arguably the most successful team in the Premier League. This was even back when the League was known as the Football League.

From 1945 onward, after the second World War, it was also the beginning of one of the greatest eras of Manchester United. In other words, it was the era of the 'Busby Babes'. However, in 1958, the rampant Busby Babes were halted in their tracks, by the Munich Air disaster, which claimed the lives of eight players. However, Matt Busby managed to rebuild the team once again.

Then, from 1986 to 2013, the next great Manchester United era began. Namely, the Sir Alex Ferguson era, where the Red Devils were dominant. Although they had a sluggish start, they came into their own in the 1990s.

Currently, after going through a few managers like David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. Finally, the team has settled with United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Premier League has two transfer windows- Summer and Winter, where clubs can buy players. The summer transfer window generally over two months long, which begins and ends before the start of the season, while the winter transfer window is the mid-season window, which lasts the month of January.

The 2019-20 Premier League was the first season to incorporate a winter break, which has always been included in major leagues across Europe. In February 2020, the Premier League saw one round of matches played over two weekends, with five matches on the weekend commencing February 8, and five on the weekend commencing on February 15.
