According to Marca and Motorsport.com, the Red Bull team are eyeing Fernando Alonso for their team. They believe that the Spaniard has made himself available for a return to Formula 1 next year.

In spite of stepping away from F1 earlier this year, sources claim that Alonso is in touch with Red Bull. This revelation comes on the back of rumours that Max Verstappen might leave and the poor performances of Pierre Gasly is making them desperate.

“Alonso’s representatives have let us know that he is available,” Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko revealed to the Dutch branch of Motorsport.com, “But for Honda, Alonso is something impossible.”

It is not surprising to learn that Fernando Alonso is unlikely to return to McLaren Renault, or any Honda-powered team. In fact, McLaren recently announced that they will retain Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris for 2020.

The Spaniard is also keenly following the news surrounding Sebastian Vettel. To be precise, the rumours of his retirement or a potential move back to Red Bull. This offer from Alonso to Red Bull is strange considering the controversy between Alonso and Red Bull boss Christian Horner. Alonso claimed that Red Bull offered him a chance to replace Daniel Ricciardo.

“I said no to offers, including one from Red Bull, because the projects weren’t winning ones,” Alonso said last September.

“My goals are no longer in Formula 1 at this point. I made my decision two months ago and I’m happy.”

“There hasn’t been any confusion, I was disappointed with his comments in the summer about my way of working and my character.”

“He never worked with me and I don’t think the people who have will say they’ve had any problems. It was strange to read this from someone who has never worked with me and has also tried to hire me several times in my career.”
