“The mistakes you do are part of your life”, the 37-year-old said in an interview with the Tribune de Geneve. They had asked the Swiss ace if he’d made any errors during his career.

He continued, “I would have done some things in a different way, I do not even know which ones.”

“Maybe in some matches, in some break points or the way I organize myself, a journey you take and you should not, playing a tournament rather than the other.

“But in the end, I have not big regrets. And it would mean to live in the past and is not good.

“It’s important to stay positive and look forward. To simply take all this as some experiences which you have to learn from. I did a lot of mistakes.”

Federer’s confession came on the back of his statement that he almost called time on his career in 2009 after breaking Pete Sampras’ Grand Slam record.

“In 2009, I won the French Open and Wimbledon to beat [Pete] Sampras’ Grand Slam titles – at the time I had already won everything, I could stop,” the Switzerland native said.

“This question was fair at the time. And it does not worry me.”

Surprisingly, the legendary player remained humble, he said: “I see myself as someone totally normal.”

“And then there are people who come to you, who recognise you, who asks you autographs or tell you that have been following you for 10-20 years, that you do well.
