Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has applied for the vacant Leicester City manager’s job.

The Foxes are searching for the replacement of recently sacked Nigel Pearson. Pearson’s departure came as a shock after he successfully guided the club out of the relegation zone despite spending over 100 days at bottom of the table.

The application by the Danish goalkeeper comes as a complete surprise, and is it is highly unlikely that the Dane will be given the job as he has no previous managerial experience.

Martin O’Neill is believed to be the favourite for the job as large sections of the fans demanding the return of their former manager. O’Neill previously managed the club, guiding them to promotion to the top flight in 1996. But the foxes are yet to approach the the current Republic of Ireland manager.

Schmeichel appeared 292 times for United between 1991-1999 and was voted as the “World’s Best Goalkeeper” in 1992 and 1993.
