Back in August, Sebastian Vettel admitted that he was not a fan of sponsored F1 trophies. Instead, he wishes to see the various venues have their own unique trophies.

According to the Ferrari driver, a circuit’s trophies form a vital part of the sport’s heritage. Vettel said, “When I started watching Formula 1 on TV some races had very iconic trophies in terms of design or material that they use.”

“I’m not chasing glory as in people knowing my name or knowing my name – I think I picked the right sport anyway because I’m wearing a helmet most of the time – but these small things, they make a difference to me. I care, I think for me they are part of traditions and when I look back at old pictures I see the old guys lifting the trophies in the different countries.”

Once again, his ire was drawn at the Mexican Grand Prix 2019 as yet another sponsor trophy was presented. Of course, there were other aspects of the ceremony, that Sebastian Vettel was not particularly fond of, but that’s another story.

“We have a great race, but then you get the shitty trophies that look boring. Maybe we should have something traditional in the future. There’s Heineken written everywhere, you don’t need to have the fricking star on the trophy as well.”

Vettel was forced to settle for second place after Mercedes managed to out-strategise Ferrari. They gambled on a 1-stop strategy by slapping on the hard tyres for both cars. As a result, Lewis Hamilton was able to leapfrog Vettel to take the win. However, with Valtteri Bottas in 3rd, the championship battle will move to the USA in a week’s time. Meanwhile, Red Bull had to settled for 3rd best as Max Verstappen bungled his chances and Alex Albon couldn’t keep up.
