Shaun White Admits Snowboarding Took A Toll On His Mental Health in 2014- “I Couldn’t Control the Outcome”

As Shaun White prepares for his 5th Olympic Games, he has been sharing his experiences from all the Olympics he has been to.

White grabbed the Gold Medals in 3 of them, the 2006, 2010, and 2018 Winter Olympics. However, he left the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics empty-handed. White wasn’t able to give a podium finish at the 2014 Olympics.

Recently, he has talked about how the loss felt and what was the lesson he learned from the 2014 loss.

What the 2014 Sochi loss felt like for White

When Shaun White went to Sochi in 2014, he was the popular choice to win the halfpipe. He was already a 2-time Olympic champion then and there were a lot of expectations from him.

But it was a shock for Shaun White and his fans when he finished 4th in the finals, missing out on a podium finish. This was very disheartening for White because he hadn’t tasted failure before in Olympics.

White spoke to BBC about how his life turned after this loss and how hard it was for him to overcome it. White described the feeling of loss as something that was out of his control.

“It was like watching a movie where I couldn’t control the outcome,” said White.

He has previously also revealed that by the time of his last run, he was already demotivated. He has now added that when he was about to do his last run, he already knew he was going to lose.

“I had the winning run in my hands, I just couldn’t do it. I was standing there thinking ‘wow, I’m going to lose.”

Moreover, he also talked about how he planned to retire after Sochi. The loss took a severe toll on his mental health and he felt defeated.

After his loss, White isolated himself and started practicing on his own halfpipe. However, when he saw his family and friends enjoying social media, he felt really bad.

“The things that you don’t normally think about, that you normally shut out to get the job done,” said White.

Not only did this affect his mental health, but it also distracted him from his main focus. It took some time for White to come to terms with his loss.

“Once I had lost, I awoke from this daydream and was like ‘so this is what it is like to lose at an Olympics.”

But this loss taught White a valuable lesson, that things don’t go as planned always. He started working harder and looked forward to his next goal. Fast forward to 2018, Shaun White won the Gold Medal for the 3rd time, proving that he was the GOAT.
