Simao Sabrosa: NorthEast United announce Marquee Signing

Indian Super League team NorthEast United have announced the signing of former Portuguese international, Simao Sabrosa for the second edition of the ISL.

Simao, who starred for Portugal in the 2004 Euro Final, will add a lot of experience to the NorthEast United setup. With over 170 appearances for Benfica and around 140 for Atletico Madrid, the 35 year old winger has played in some of the best leagues in the world and competed with players of the highest caliber.

The Europa League winner shall replace World Cup winning defender, Joan Capdevila as the club’s marquee signing. After finishing bottom of the group in the first edition of the ISL, this signing is viewed as a statement of intent from NorthEast United who have moved early in the transfer market.

Speaking at his contract signing press conference, Simao said, “I am looking forward to this new challenge. India is a wonderful country full of rich culture and heritage. The Indian Super League has brought football in India to everybody’s attention and I cannot wait to participate in it.”

The former Sporting Lisbon youth player also spoke of how his decision to join NorthEast United was made easier through numerous interactions with club owner John Abraham.

“Why NorthEast United? I felt that it was the right time to take up a new challenge. Every conversation I had with John made me feel that the club is one big family and that everyone would love to have me as a member. I also spoke to Joan who confirmed everything that John told me. I am very pleased to be a part of this family now.”

Simao’s arrival shall spark further interest in the league and could set in motion the prospective arrival of more players of his reputation as the world awaits the commencement of the second edition of the ISL.
