Records are not something new for Lionel Messi. This year, the 36-year-old went to the MLS after rejecting offers, especially from Saudi. Messi’s decision to go to the USA was taken with a view beyond soccer. And he has been in shining form in the MLS so far and obviously, breaking records comes as complimentary. Here, let’s take a look at 5 potential records the Argentinian can very well break.

While Messi already has the record for the most number of goals in the top 5 leagues in Europe, he has many other records including the most number of Balon D’Ors and Golden Boots. Even though we may think he could have aimed for a couple more UEFA Champions League trophies, age was a crucial factor. One of the most mindboggling records of Lionel Messi that remains is the 91 goals in the calendar year 2012. He also holds many league-level records like Most Goals in La Liga, Most La Liga Goals in a single season, and Most La Liga Hat-tricks.

Since Messi has so many records, here, we look at what records La Pulga can break with Inter Miami in MLS.

1. The fastest number of matches to reach 10 goals

The record for the fastest number of matches taken to score ten goals is held by Carlos Ruiz.  The former star from Guatemala just took 10 games to score his first 10 goals for LA Galaxy in 2002. Messi needs 9 more goals in 7 matches to break the record or can get level by scoring 8. He went goalless in yesterday’s match to make it a bit more exciting.

2. Most hat-tricks in the League

Messi in total has 57 hat-tricks for club and country together. But to break the record in MLS he would need to score more than one-tenth of his total hat-tricks. The record holder will be playing with him together in pink. Yes, that’s none other than Joseph Martinez who also played for Atlanta United, and scored all his hat-tricks in the previous decade for his former team

3. Longest goal-scoring run

Joseph Martinez holds even this record during his stint with his former Team Atlanta United. Messi needs to score in 16 consecutive matches to set the record for the most consecutive matches scored. That wouldn’t be a piece of cake, even for Messi.

4. Quickest to reach 10 assists

We all know what Messi does without putting much effort. Messi finds passes to his teammates like a wizard. The greatest assister of all time now sets his eye on MLS to provide several assists to help his team win more matches. He has an opportunity to break the record of the fastest player to reach 10 assists. The record belongs to Carlos Valderrama of Tampa Bay Mutiny who has the record for most assists in a single MLS season.

5. Most free-kick goals

Messi started the Inter Miami campaign with a free-kick. It does not sound impossible to score 14 free kicks for Messi to beat the record held by Sebastian Giovinco. Fans know Giovinco aka ‘Atomic Ant’ for his brilliant direct free-kicks. Messi would back himself to beat the record.
