It’s a new era at Manchester United. Following the summer arrivals of Andre Onana, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Højlund, they look like a squad ready to challenge. Hence, the performance levels have risen in the recent pre-season friendlies. However, in their match against Borussia Dortmund, the soccer fraternity witnessed their new goalkeeper taking it all out on Harry Maguire after a mistake almost led to a goal. There are new standards set in Manchester, but one Premier League icon seems unimpressed.

He explained how Maguire became the target after being made the scapegoat in recent years. United failed to replicate the success they showcased during the Sir Alex Ferguson era, and fans criticized the English defender for most of their wrongdoings. Is this the new way at United?

Gabriel Agbonlahor always arrives with TalkSport to voice his opinions. In his latest interview, the former striker doubts Onana’s telling-off capabilities and that he would have a different approach to Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford.

He stated, “First of all, Harry Maguire didn’t do anything wrong. He played the ball to the midfielder. The midfielder gives it away. And I feel like he’s an easy target. I don’t like that from Onana. I feel, are you doing that to Martinez? Are you running after Rashford like that? I don’t think you are. I think Maguire’s an easy target so I think I will look at that.”

In recent years, social media criticized Maguire for his performances at the club. He made numerous high-profile errors that cost the club dearly. Hence, fans wanted him out of the starting line-up. Following that, the Red Devils signed Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. He is aggressive in nature, and the pocket-size pit bull from the Pampas takes no prisoners. Yet, Agbonlahor was not happy to see that from the new goalkeeper.

He continued, “I understand if it was like a big mistake and its cost a goal or it was Harry Maguire’s fault, fair enough. But I want to see energy, the same energy for every player.” Moving forward, it would be something critical to notice when United plays.

Andre Onana brings in new standards!

After having David de Gea as the number one, new standards mean fresh players. The squad is having a complete overhaul under Ten Hag, and Onana comes as the unique piece in the puzzle. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and assisted Inter Milan to reach the UEFA Champions League final. One of the main hallmarks of his style is the distribution. He picks out a pass with ease and is an able shot-stopper.
