In a tactical move last night, Paris Saint Germain boss Luis Enrique asked his players to slow down against Borussia Dortmund. Much to Kylian Mbappé’s unhappiness, PSG settled for a draw and eventually booked a spot in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase. Moreover, Enrique has not just shown excitement for the UCL knockouts but has also sent a chilling warning to their rivals, including mammoths such as Real Madrid and Manchester City.

The likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City, among others, have cruised into the knockouts, finishing first in their groups, unlike PSG. But does it make PSG any less of an opponent? Not in the least, says Luis Enrique. And here’s the reason behind Enrique’s newfound optimism in the Parisian club.

The commencement of the Round of 16 in the UCL is slated for February 13, 2024. All group runners-up will face group winners in this round. PSG looks to play group winners such as Real Madrid, Manchester City, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, FC Barcelona, Real Sociedad, and Bayern Munich. Anyhow, critical changes in PSG have instilled in Luis Enrique a supreme sense of confidence to take out these big soccer clubs. “There were 11 new transfers. There is a new staff, and even a new training campus. In February, we will be much stronger. None of the teams that finished first in their respective group will want to face PSG. Ask them,” said Luis Enrique.

There is no doubt Enrique’s confident proclamation will instill in the PSG squad a spirit to fight harder. However, PSG has quite a few problems to resolve before planning to terrify the group winners of the game. PSG’s struggles to display consistent performances forced them to settle for the second position in the group. Furthermore, the team’s star forward, Kylian Mbappé, is least pleased with Luis Enrique’s tactics lately.

PSG’s form swung like a pendulum during the UCL group stage matches. They opened the group matches with a commanding win, only to be humiliated by rivals. Soon, another win came their way, only to see a loss later neutralizing the victory. A few dull draw matches eventually led the Parisian club to the knockout phase.

Besides, Kylian Mbappe has shown his frustration against Enrique’s tactics on the field. A player of Mbappe’s stature remaining unhappy is no reasonable news for the Spanish manager. Moreover, several rumors linking Mbappe to the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool hover around PSG. Considering all this, it there are doubts if PSG can pose as strong a challenge as they claim to their potential rivals. Do you think they can defeat the other European juggernauts?
