Al Nassr’s search for a new sporting director started on Christmas Day, 2023. Goran Vucevic had just left the club and the Saudi club’s search for a new man for the job led them to Fernando Hierro. The Real Madrid icon was on the verge of accepting the appointment and everything looked to be settled. However, things suddenly went haywire as reports emerged that Hierro wanted to continue with his current club C.D. Guadalajara. It looked certain he would go the Miguel Ribeiro route until the involvement of Cristiano Ronaldo.

As per recent reports by ESPN, Cristiano Ronaldo has reached out to the former Real Madrid star Fernando Hierro to convince him of the Al Nassr project. Notably, CR7 knows the Spaniard from his time with Real Madrid. In fact, in 2014, he was appointed as the assistant manager to Carlo Ancelotti. Hierro was also the caretaker manager of the Spain team in the 2018 World Cup. As such he has plenty of experience working at the highest level and managing the biggest players.

It is not yet known if Cristiano Ronaldo’s efforts would work out. Regardless, it seems Al Nassr want to avoid a repeat of the Miguel Ribeiro situation. The Portuguese was recommended by CR7 and Castro for the role of sporting director. However, in a surprising turn of events, he rejected the offer at the last minute and even offered an apology to the management!

This season, Al Nassr is practically out of the title race after trailing Al Hilal by 12 points. They also were dumped out of the AFC Champions League recently. Could the lack of a sporting director have affected the team? A prominent Saudi commentator thinks so.

Many are blaming Luis Castro for Al Nassr’s struggles collectively. SSC channel analyst Ahmed Afifi has taken a different stance and said, “Al-Nassr’s bad luck is caused by what happens behind the scenes, not the coach.” He also added, “The answer comes from within the club, and what happens on the field is a reflection of the team’s internal problem.” While not explicitly stating so, Afifi is likely pointing toward the sporting director situation.

On December 25th, Goran Vucevic, the previous sporting director announced his departure via a Whatsapp message. Per reports, Vucevic had a falling out with the club CEO, Guido Fienga. The sudden departure of Vucevic also seemed to impact the club in the Winter transfer window as the transfer activity was minimal. This was a key reason why Al Nassr wanted to get Miguel Ribeiro on board. However, that failed badly and the club is now keen to have Fernando Hierro on board.
