Despite Historical American Viewership, 2022 FIFA WC Final Remains a Whopping 7 Million Behind Women’s World Cup Record

The recently concluded FIFA World Cup in Qatar garnered tremendous attention worldwide. Even in the US, where soccer is usually overpowered by leagues like NBA and NFL, the viewership was through the roof. Soccer was never the top sport in the States, however, USMNT managed to qualify for the tournament.

They performed exceedingly well and qualified for the knockouts without losing a game. However, their campaign came to an end after losing to the Netherlands. However, the hype the event had built in the country will not be over as more and more people started to watch the matches. The last game between France and Argentina witnessed unimaginable hype as it broke various records of viewership.

The road to the finals was full of action. A very close match between the Netherlands and Argentina, a 2-0 win against Croatia, and very smooth sailing by France are what led to the Finals. They glued everybody to the TV as the game began. According to reports, Fox Sports had 16.8 million viewers watch the match, which is a record.

The hype couldn’t beat ‘that FIFA World Cup final’

Although the match became the most-watched men’s final in US TV history with 16.8 million watching in English, this match still trailed behind the record of Fox Sports that was made back in 2015. The match was USA vs Japan, the 2015 FIFA Women’s world cup final.

That match averaged a whopping 23 million viewership as fans glued to the screen to watch USWNT beat Japan 5-2. We can note various factors which affect the viewership. First and foremost, it was the US team playing in the finals, makes sense that the nation would want to watch more. It also helps that they telecast the match live at 7 PM, a time slot that has a lot of viewership. They telecast the final between France and Argentina at 10 AM.
