Confidence is impressive for an athlete, but self-awareness is even better. The team above all has been one of the biggest mantras for Wrexham AFC over the years, and finally, it has started producing dividends. In one such instance, Ryan Reynolds could not hold back his appreciation for the club’s former goalkeeper Ben Foster who chose to call quits helping the team acquire some young blood. In a strange but stunning revelation, Reynolds opens up on what he thought about Foster retiring.

Reynolds’ opinion was not a conventional one with over-heaped praises for a retired player. In fact, the Hollywood star gave an honest but heartwarming take. In the new season of Welcome to Wrexham, Reynolds said, “I thought it was generous. Like it was an incredibly generous thing to do. So few people know when to call it, you know.” praising the timing of the call.

Meanwhile, Rob McElhenney humorously agreed with Reynolds, saying, “I’ve been making Sunny for seven..,” referring to his persistence with the TV show for a long time to which Reynolds replied, “I’m making Wolverine Ten,” and then spoke about the awareness of Ben Foster to call it at the right time. Reynolds also acknowledged his ‘immense amount of respect for Ben Foster,’ ‘both as a player and a person,’ after his brief spell under the Hollywood ownership.

How did Ben Foster’s retirement help Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham?

On the other hand, despite having a tremendous time in the dying stages of the National League 2022-23, Foster chose to hang his boots. After joining in March 2023, he signed a one-year extension at the beginning of the 2023-24 season. However, the 41-year-old felt he fell short of his own expectations during the few League Two games he played. Forster stated last year, “The honest truth is that my performances this season haven’t reached the level I demand of myself, and I feel that now is the right time to retire,” explaining why he retired. The former Manchester United conceded 14 goals in four league matches without a clean sheet before taking a call.

Subsequently, Wrexham went on to replace him with Arthur Okonkwo who proved to be pivotal in the club’s promotion. The new loanee from Premier League giants Arsenal has been inducted into the League Two Team of the Season along with his teammate Elliot Lee. Nevertheless, Reynolds has not forgotten the important contributions of the former keeper who kept three clean sheets in 8 National League games he played. Overall, Wrexham has been lucky to have selfless players. And with the promotion to League One, every member can be proud of their contribution.
