If John Terry, Ashley Cole, and Rio Ferdinand, were to line up in a team, one would arguably be looking at soccer’s best defensive unit. Much to the relief of Premier League attackers, such a powerful union of defenders never happened on the field. But the three, along with a couple of other defenders, had once formed a 5-A-side team during a scrimmage with the England National team. However, they failed to pose a defensive threat to the opponents. Rather, the 5-A-side team of defenders took the beating, courtesy of a veteran English winger.

In a recent conversation, Rio Ferdinand recalled the thrilling yet tiresome scrimmage with his English teammates. As he puts it, England star Aaron Lennon‘s exploits gave a tough time to him, John Terry, and Ashley Cole.

Aaron Lennon appeared as the guest in an episode of the ‘Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE’ podcast. Minutes into the conversation, Ferdinand recalled facing Lennon and co. during a scrimmage. The Manchester United legend, along with John Terry, Ashley Cole, and two other center-backs, faced a team of five attackers, including Aaron Lennon, Wayne Rooney, and Steven Gerrard. “Us defenders are sitting there and this out of order in a 1 V 1 situation, and we’re all moaning, ‘No why are we doing this, we got a big game of the weekend,’ said Rio Ferdinand.

The Red Devils veteran then added that Aaron Lennon and Co. were ‘smoking’ and ‘blazing’ the defenders, including himself and John Terry. Furthermore, the scrimmage turned out to be a ‘battle’ leaving grass torn up on the ground. Rio Ferdinand also added that the veteran winger ended up scratching the opponent’s defenders to get rid of them. While the scrimmage was tiresome for the defenders, it was the best of times for Aaron Lennon and Co, he revealed.

As both English veterans recalled on the podcast, the one-on-one scrimmage took place on a proper soccer ground, with a lot of space to cover. Ferdinand said that playing in such a huge space left his team exposed. The attacker Lennon, however, saw that as a great opportunity to showcase his skill set. The attacking team utilized the space so well that they played long balls and ran at full pace to have the ball under their control.

Confronting Ferdinand and Terry one-on-one, the likes of Lennon dribbled the ball so wide that the defenders could not even grab his t-shirt and stop him. After failing against the winger and his team, Rio Ferdinand was even displeased at their team coach for the scrimmage.
