The Oscars are back, and the party begins. Everything Everywhere All at Once swept the ceremony by winning seven awards, and amongst the notable films on the list, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick received six nominations. Moreover, former USMNT icon Alexi Lalas believed they should have won every award. Hence, the movie received an unexpected shout-out from one of the former top defenders in soccer

The movie won just one Oscar for Best Sound after a sensational soundtrack. Although opinions divide on whether they deserve to be in the conversation, Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel to the 1986 hit film Top Gun where Tom Cruise excited the audience with breathtaking stunts.

Lalas tweeted his opinion on how Top Gun: Maverick deserved to win every award. He stated, “Give Top Gun everything.” Similarly, the original Top Gun won the Best Song category back at the 1987 Academy Awards for Take My Breath Away by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock. It also received nominations for Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Effects Editing. Yet, history was rewritten as it won the Best Sound award in this year’s Oscars.

The number of nominations also increased to six compared to the 1986 movie. The nominations were Best Film, Best Sound (which it won), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects. The movie has a cult following because of Tom Cruise’s iconic stunt sequences.

Although most award winners were well deserved, movies like Elvis and The Banshees of Inisherin went under the bridge. The former received eight nominations while failing to win at least one, while the latter received nine nominations. But for Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise can celebrate a successful year with one of the best action movies in recent times.

The other notable awards winners were Brendan Fraser for his subtle portrayal of the character in the Whale, while Michelle Yeoh won the Best Actress award for the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. At the end of the day, Top Gun: Maverick avenged the loss back in 1987.
