When Manchester United hired Erik Ten Hag, he laid down some strict principles for the squad. He hasn’t compromised with those since then, and now we can see how it is the one factor helping the club in its revival. Ten Hag hasn’t stopped himself from punishing the players despite their stature. It was evident when he dropped Cristiano Ronaldo last year from the squad for leaving early.

United star Bruno Fernandes highlighted the same during an interview with BT Sport. Fernandes spoke about various aspects, like the demanding nature of the manager and his captaincy, while speaking on Between The Lines with United legend Rio Ferdinand.

Bruno Fernandes sheds light on Ten Hag punishing Cristiano Ronaldo

The first thing Erik Ten Hag did on his appointment as United manager last season was reset the previous culture. He laid down his demands from the squad and let the players know that ill-discipline won’t be tolerated in the group. He has been strict about his principles since the appointment, and the players like Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford have already got the stick from the manager.

When Rio Ferdinand asked Fernandes about Ten Hag and his demanding nature, the Portuguese replied, “He demands from people. He demands, and you either do it, or you’re out. In the beginning, everyone was like: ‘Will he do that if a big player doesn’t do what he wants? Will he pull him apart or not?’ And then he did it many times, he did it with Cristiano, he did it with Jadon, and with Marcus also.”

The Dutch manager dropped Ronaldo from the squad for his behavior issues. The Portuguese captain left the game early, and it did not impress Ten Hag. United star forward Rashford was late to attend the team meeting, and the Dutch manager did the same with the Three Lions star by dropping him from the starting lineup.

United’s boss dropped Sancho to the bench owing to his poor performances. Later, the player went to rehab in the Netherlands and has returned to the squad recently. Ten Hag, with his ethics and demanding nature, is helping the players and the club to regain the lost form.

The United did the appointment of the former Ajax coach on the back of one of the worst seasons. The start of the current season was also unexpected for the club. But as the season progressed, the club is cementing its position at number three in the Premier League table.

They will play the League Cup final this weekend and are still alive in the FA Cup. On Thursday, the team got the better of the Spanish giants FC Barcelona to reach the round of 16 in the Europa League. The players like Rashford and Fernandes are looking in dominant form, with Rashford being the highest scorer in the league since the World Cup.
