Deadpool superstar Ryan Reynolds is known for his funny and offbeat comments. And he didn’t shy away from giving a weird remark when discussing his purchase of the world’s oldest soccer stadium in his documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

Welcome to Wrexham covers the journey of Reynolds and co-owner Rob McElhenney as they take over the Welsh soccer club Wrexham AFC. The club’s home ground, the Racecourse Ground, is the oldest recorded international soccer stadium, having hosted numerous historic matches for both Wrexham and Wales.

Weird response from the Deadpool star

For Reynolds, owning the Racecourse Ground came with a sense of responsibility, given its historic significance.

“Having the oldest international football stadium on the planet under our stewardship is, like, both elation. And, weirdly, I can feel an ulcer growing, as we speak,” he said in the documentary.

It’s certainly a weird response, but given the historic significance of the soccer club and stadium, it’s understandable that Reynolds would feel some pressure. While Racecourse Ground is the oldest International stadium, Wrexham is also the third oldest soccer club in the world.

Reynolds’s reaction to this was one of both elation and trepidation. On the one hand, he was excited to be a part of such a historic club and ground. On the other hand, he had concerns about the responsibility that comes with owning such a valuable piece of property.

Ryan Reynolds is on a mission to revive the soccer club Wrexham AFC and its stadium, Racecourse ground, to its former glory. The ground has had a rich history, but recent times haven’t been the best for it. The stadium has gone old and, with no work put in years, is crumbling and falling apart.

But the actor has taken the initiative to renovate the iconic Kop stand of the stadium, by demolishing it and building from scratch, while also adding extra 5500 seats. This is in the hope that the stadium can host international matches of Wales again. That didn’t happen in the past decades because of the stadium’s condition.
