Soccer is easy when you have Lionel Messi pulling the strings for your side. But it seems Inter Miami has realized that the Argentine maestro also makes life easier off the pitch as well. New signing- defensive midfielder Federico Redondo is a shrewd acquisition by the Herons. But would he have made the move if the 8x Ballon d’Or winner wasn’t lining up for David Beckham‘s side? Let’s find out below.

In a recent presser with Inter Miami, the Argentine starlet revealed his admiration for the soccer icon. Federico said (via Google Translate), “For me, he (Lionel Messi) is the best in history, and playing with him is a dream.” Regarding Messi’s role in his signing, he added, “Messi’s presence here had a great influence on my decision.” Son of legendary Real Madrid midfielder, Fernando Redondo, Federico wasn’t short of suitors. European powerhouses like AC Milan, Liverpool, and even Real Madrid were interested in acquiring his services. Hence, Federico’s decision to join the Herons showcases the increasing allure of playing in MLS. But, this transfer very nearly didn’t happen.

The hindrance was the MLS Roster compliance. In simple words, the league has a maximum salary cap on a single player ($683,750 as of 2024). Inter Miami, had 10 players above this limit! This includes big names like Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets. Hence, to make further signings, they had to compensate. The compensation was the sale of players like Gregore, Edison Azcona, and more at the last moment.

Hence, it explains why the signing of Redondo was completed on February 24, after Inter Miami’s first game of the season. Unfortunately, he is yet to make his debut and link up with Lionel Messi. The reason is a non-soccer one.

Explained: Why is Federico Redondo yet to play for Lionel Messi and Co. at Inter Miami?

Sergio Busquets had an injury worry from pre-season and Federico was expected to ease the load on the veteran. However, two weeks in, he has yet to play a single minute for the side. The reason was a delay in processing his paperwork, in particular the Visa. But as per ESPN, the midfielder has recently obtained his Visa and is ready to play.

This means the young star could make his long-awaited debut in the CONCACAF Champions Cup against Nashville. The midfielder is set to wear the #55 shirt and fulfill his ‘dream’ of playing alongside Lionel Messi. Speaking of Messi, the Argentine maestro played a key role in helping the Herons qualify for the tournament.

After all, it is due to their Leagues Cup triumph in 2023, which Messi had a huge hand in, that Inter Miami found themselves in the Champions Cup.
