Last year’s domestic season ended really well for the Premier League side Manchester City. The Cityzens managed to clinch not only their first Champions League title but also the historic treble. They have witnessed a brilliant few seasons in the past few years. While the glory continues for the blue side of Manchester, the same cannot be said for the red side, Manchester United.

It hasn’t been much of a significant success for Manchester United in the following years. A club that once dominated at the pinnacle of soccer is now struggling to win trophies. Meanwhile, their star player also recently spoke about the agony to see the club’s arch-rivals win the treble.

It was in 2016 when Pep Guardiola came to Etihad Stadium. Since then, the Sky Blues have witnessed nothing but success. Though that also came by enduring back-to-back European upsets, they were finally able to clinch the much-anticipated trophy. While the soccer world celebrated their win, their arch-rival player, Luke Shaw was really hurt by their treble success.

While speaking to BBC, the United defender accepted defeat on behalf of his domestic side. “It hurt a lot. A lot,” said Shaw. “All of us as players felt that, especially for me, seeing them come to the England camp. It was really hard to take. We can’t let that happen again.” The addition of Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Kalvin Phillips to the England squad after their victory only emphasized the magnitude of their achievement.

“It’s our time now to start putting a stamp on things and not letting it always be so easy for them because, in the past, it’s looked like that.” He added, “As players, we can’t accept that any more.” Shaw insisted that his team must pave its way to compete against their arch-rivals and bring back the glory days.

Interestingly, since Shaw’s arrival in 2014, United have won just four trophies. After Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, only Jose Mourinho managed to win more than one cup, and United has only lifted trophies in back-to-back seasons once. Likewise, Shaw expressed his determination to turn around the club’s fortunes.

While underlining his agony towards City, Shaw rallied his side to buckle up. “To be successful we need to be challenging for every trophy and winning competitions.” The left-back insisted that his side could have and should have “added another two competitions” last season. Shaw also spoke about how the arrival of manager Erik Ten Hag has “changed the culture” at United.

“It’s the attitude, the way we train, the intensity, the application that everyone brings in day in, day out.” The England international insisted the manager demands the players to “stay at their best” in order to “get to the maximum level.” Indeed, it seems Shaw is deeply affected by City’s treble win as he looks to gear up with his side to contest for the triumph. Perhaps things may change for them in the upcoming season.
