“It’s an Absolute Catastrophe!” – Germany’s Captain Thomas Muller Hints at Retirement After a Dismal Show at FIFA World Cup 2022

The German Soccer World was devastated as Japan shocked everyone again by defeating Spain 2-1, knocking out the Germans from the prestigious tournament in the process. Japan came back from a goal deficit to beat the ‘La Furia Roja’. Alvaro Morata scored the first goal of the game for Spain in the 11th Minute. However, Japan came back in the second half by scoring back-to-back goals in the 48th and 51st minutes.

With the heroics of Ritsu Doan and Ao Tanaka, Japan topped the table and qualified for the round of 16 by winning 2 big matches. Germany, however, is eliminated despite their 4-2 win over Costa Rica.

The group stage is coming to a conclusion with only 4 games left. Despite winning their match against Costa Rica, Germany failed to qualify and finished in the third spot. Spain has secured the 2nd position in the group with Japan topping the table. 

Thomas Muller and Hansi Flick open up after their defeat

Hansi flick and Thomas Muller attended a press conference after their elimination and talked about the future of German football.

Hansi Flick while addressing the Euros 2024 scheduled to be held in Germany, said, In light of the Euros, it is difficult to talk about that right now, but we need to assess our World Cup, head into a different direction…This is the next step we will take, and we will do it very soon.”

Thomas Muller also talked about Germany’s second consecutive group-stage elimination.

Muller said, It’s an absolute catastrophe… It is unbelievably bitter for us because our result would have been enough. It’s a feeling of powerlessness… If that was my last game for Germany, it has been a tremendous pleasure. Thank you very much.”

The morale of the team seems low and during this time, the future looks uncertain, both for the coach and some veterans in the team. However, Flick didn’t talk about his future with the team. While addressing the performance of the team, the Head Coach of Germany said, “But I am not looking for excuses. We fulfilled our duty today, we got the win, but the scoreline could have been better.

The Round of 16 fixtures is almost clear as 14 out of the 16 teams have qualified. Later today, Japan will be facing Croatia, while Spain will play against Morocco. The first match of the round of 16 stage will be between Netherlands and the USMNT, followed by Argentina vs. Australia.
