As Parisian giants PSG aim to become one of European soccer’s heavyweights, their dream of winning the Champions League has dwindled in recent seasons. As it turns out, PSG have never won a Champions League title. They did, however, reach the final in 2019/20 and the semi-finals in 2020/21. But now, according to PSG’s president, the French club’s ‘obsession’ with winning the UCL trophy has ended.

PSG have endured tumultuous campaigns over the past two seasons in the UEFA Champions League. They have been knocked out in the Round of 16 in both 2021/22 and 2022/23 by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively. This was despite having star names like Lionel Messi and Neymar apart from Kylian Mbappe in their squads. PSG have found it cumbersome to hang on to Mbappe, with interest from Real Madrid and Saudi Arabia this summer after the departures of Neymar and Messi. The club are certainly in limbo currently, however, PSG’s president seems to think otherwise.

According to his recent comments in the media, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has suggested that the club are rebuilding and are trying reinvent their playing style and culture.

As per his conversation in the press, Al Khelaifi said, “The Champions League is not an obsession at all, it’s over.” “We’re building a new identity, our own style, our own playing principles, an attacking game and a new culture. That’s what we want, and the results will follow.” “We want our players to enjoy playing, our staff to enjoy coaching and our fans to enjoy watching.”

This comes after the PSG president spoke about Messi’s jibe towards the Paris club, where Khelaifi stated that it was “sensitive” to celebrate Messi’s World Cup win against France after Messi hit out at his former employers.
PSG have, however, found it difficult to hold on to star forward Kylian Mbappe. This comes shortly after the La Liga released their spending caps for Spanish clubs.
