Jose Mourinho rejected lucrative offers from Saudi Pro League clubs last year. But, he assured, “I will go to Saudi Arabia in some free time. I don’t know when, but I am pretty sure of it.” Seems like now is the ‘free time’, as AS Roma has recently shown Mourinho the door. According to Saudi-based journalist Turki Alghamdi, Mourinho has agreed to join Al Shabab. The club is awaiting the Finance Committee of the Ministry of Sports’ approval to work out a deal with the 60-year-old.

Jose Mourinho reportedly spoke to Al Shabab’s sporting director, Dominico Tite, via Zoom, and nodded to join the Riyadh-based outfit. Furthermore, the ex-Chelsea and ex-Real Madrid boss is expected to travel as soon as Al Shabab completes the negotiation. Mourinho’s Al Shabab move looks plausible as the manager’s seat is vacant. They currently depend on the interim manager Saad Al Subaie.

Al Shabab is not among the four clubs owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Therefore, it is unsure if Jose Mourinho will get as lucrative an offer as the one he got last year from one of the PIF-owned clubs. Notably, the potential Al Shabab role will not be a walk in the park considering the lack of European experience in the squad.

The club currently sits #11 on the Saudi Pro League table. Moreover, Al Shabab does not boast as many overseas talents as their PIF-owned counterparts do. Yannick Carrasco, Ever Banega, and Roman Saiss are the only Shabab players who boast European experience. While both sides await the Finance Committee’s nod, the obvious doubts do arise. What if the deal does not work out? We have you covered. Here are some clubs Jose Mourinho can head to.

Jose Mourinho is linked to well-known Newcastle United. Their current manager Eddie Howe’s run has raised eyebrows, as the Magpies struggle as the 10th-seeded side. Besides Newcastle, ‘the Special One’ could come back home to Portugal and join Porto again after 20 years. He had led Porto to a UEFA Champions League win during his prior stint. Moreover, the club has not seen any remarkable success under its current boss Sergio Conceicao. So, a potential return to Porto cannot be ruled out.

Chelsea could bring in Jose Mourinho for the third time! Despite splashing over $1 billion in the transfer market, the London-based club is struggling to see remarkable success under Mauricio Pochettino. If the struggles persist, the club might show him the door. Besides these clubs, the 60-year-old could also take a shot with national teams, such as England and Portugal. Should they fail to make an impact in the upcoming UEFA Euro, we could witness possible managerial departures.

One take at a time

My journey as a sports aficionado was not colored by soccer initially. The 2006 FIFA World Cup, however, changed me, as I fell in love with the beautiful game. From cheering on Real Madrid to channeling an inner analyst with my pals during every other World Cup and kicking the ball timelessly, soccer is now a therapy for me with boundless conversations.
