Just when you thought the stakes for the Inter Miami vs Monterrey clash couldn’t get any bigger, the narrative has been flipped on its head. The Herons will lock horns against Monterrey this Wednesday in the second-leg quarterfinal clash of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Tempers soared during the previous encounter between the two sides with the Liga MX side picking up a 2-1 win. However, Lionel Messi and Monterrey head coach Fernando Ortiz were all over the headlines despite the Argentine not even taking to the field!

Here’s a little backstory. Fernando Ortiz, before the game against Inter Miami, questioned the officiating standards in the tournament, claiming match referees get influenced by Lionel Messi while making their decision. Well, despite his words, it was Inter Miami who was at the receiving end of an officiating call which saw David Ruiz picking up a red card, leading to the side drop to 10 men. Ultimately. The Herons ended up conceding in the dying minutes of the game.

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba were not too impressed with the decision as they voiced their frustrations with match official Walter Lopez. However, things took an ugly turn when the ex-Barcelona trio got into a heated argument with Ortiz and his assistant, Nico Sanchez. Well, it seems like things almost got out of hand with Monterrey even filing an official complaint against Lionel Messi and his teammates!

Fernando Ortiz walks scot-free as Lionel Messi and teammates dragged into legal trouble

As per reports, Monterrey has lodged a complaint with CONCACAF against Lionel Messi and all those involved in the drama between them and team coach Ortiz. The club has also listed Suarez, Alba, and some of Inter Miami’s staff who had been drawn into the discussion. The club expects a decision to be made before next week’s return leg. Surprisingly, CONCACAF has given Ortiz a clean chit despite questioning the authority of the match officials in a public setting.

Well, the recent happening won’t do either side any favor this Wednesday. Miami, away from home, will need to put in some extra work to turn the one-goal deficit. However, with their captain back into the mix against the Colorado Rapids, fans can expect him to be on the field for the high-octane fixture against the Liga MX side.
