All players have seen some rough phases in their respective careers. Lionel Messi hit absolute rock-bottom in 2014, as Argentina lost to Germany in the finals of the 2014 World Cup. Fans questioned if Messi had what it takes to deliver on the international stage. Nine years following the defeat, La Pulga touched down on the loss in an interview with Adidas, describing it as the one game from his career he’d like to play again.

Despite the loss, Messi bounced back strong in 2022 as he led the side to the World Cup title, getting his hands on the coveted title for the first time in his career. The Argentinian talisman was the anchor for the team throughout the competition as he emerged as the Player of the Tournament for his contribution. But despite winning it first in 2014, not having your crowning glory even affects even the GOATs!

Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi was present alongside Real Madrid icon Zinedine Zidane in a sit-down interview organized by Adidas. During the interview, Messi was asked if there was any game from his career that he could relive the moment and change the course of the match. 

While the Argentine initially stated he does not regret anything, he later added that the defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final was something he has never erased from his memory.

Messi stated, “Well, just as I was saying before, things happen because they have to. And I don’t regret anything in the journey I had to go through. I was lucky to have many happy moments. But, there were also sad moments along the way for not achieving the goal, but it turned out that way because it had to be like that. Nevertheless, the little thorn from the 2014 World Cup final.”

The loss against Germany in the finals saw fans doubt Messi for his failure to lead the national team. However, La Pulga proved everyone wrong last year as he got his hands on the World Cup title with the La Albiceleste.

It is not an understatement that 2022 will be iconic for soccer fans for many reasons. The year saw some very memorable games throughout the season. However, nothing beats Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup title with Argentina. La Pulga captured the one trophy that eluded him for his entire career last year as he performed for the ages.

Argentina was in for a rude awakening as they lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia in their opening game. However, the team bounced back from the defeat in style as they remained unbeaten for the rest of the tournament, getting their hands on the World Cup. Messi was the star of the show in the tournament as he bagged seven goals and three assists for his side.
