For the first time in over a decade, it looks like we are about to witness a new Bundesliga champion. Seemingly ending Bayern Munich’s monopoly over the league, there is Xabi Alonso’s youthful Bayer Leverkusen side. As such, many players are attracting a lot of interest in the transfer market. According to the latest reports, Premier League giants Manchester City and Manchester United are keen on a Leverkusen defender, who happens to have a prior connection with the Sky Blues.

According to The Sun, City and United are quite interested in acquiring the services of Dutch defender Jeremie Frimpong. Per reports, the Red Devils have sent scouts multiple times to watch Frimpong this season. Erik ten Hag’s side want to boost their backline next season and Frimpong fits perfectly into the club’s plans.

Meanwhile, what could boost Manchester City’s chances is the fact that Frimpong joined the club’s academy at the age of 9 before moving to Celtic in 2019. This season, his game has transcended to another level and the full-back has 11 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. To put it into perspective, that’s more than the likes of Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku, two natural attacking players!

Moreover, the 23-year-old would also serve as a quality replacement for Kyle Walker. Approaching 34, Walker is no spring chicken and his contract expires in 2026. Hence, signing Frimpong this summer could allow him to learn from Walker and ensure a smooth transition. Moreover, his ability to play on both flanks as well as in midfield would have interested Pep Guardiola.

Remarkably, Frimpong is not the only Bayer Leverkusen star Manchester City is keeping an eye on. In fact, Pep Guardiola & Co are said to have big plans for Leverkusen’s ace worth $141 million.

This season, Wirtz has scored 11 goals and recorded 17 assists. More often than not, he has been the difference maker for Alonso’s side. The midfielder is only 20 years old and has already earned 16 caps in a stacked German midfield, highlighting his class. However, with the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich interested as well, Manchester City’s quest to land their KDB successor won’t be an easy one.
