In an English Premier League season where goal difference could decide the title race, Manchester City is not scoring enough goals to make a difference. City registered two close 1-0 wins and a diminishing 1-1 draw in the last three league games. The club’s versatile attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne could have galvanized their largely misfiring frontline if he played fully in the last two games. De Bruyne remained an unused substitute against Brentford because of an injury. He came off the bench in the Bournemouth tie. Pep Guardiola now revealed why he kept KDB sidelined in the last game. Guardiola also expects him to start against Luton Town in the 5th round of the FA Cup.

Besides De Bruyne, Manchester’s attack has also been missing injured winger Jack Grealish. He also seems to be on the recovery track. However, Grealish’s availability for the FA Cup tie will probably be a game-time decision for Guardiola.

Kevin De Bruyne missed more than half of this season after he picked up a hamstring injury at the beginning of the campaign. Recently, he suffered from niggles and missed much of the action in the last two matches. In a presser before the Manchester City-Luton Town game, Pep Guardiola was asked if the Belgian would start. “He made a little, little setback and said, ‘I don’t feel comfortable’. The game vs Bournemouth, for the way they play, I decided for the bench and go in the second half… But he’s fine,” said Guardiola. This means KDB would most likely start.

Thereafter, the Spanish boss was quizzed on Jack Grealish’s injury situation. “I’ll see in today’s training; eyes, talking a little bit with them, the feeling to line up. Until then, I don’t take a decision, never, ever…,” he said, clearly implying Grealish would be a game-time decision. Apart from De Bruyne and Grealish, Manchester City also has Josko Gvardiol on the injury list. He recently tore his ankle ligament and City has not confirmed when he will return. Though Guardiola has good news regarding KDB, recurring injuries have done enough to mar his team’s form lately.

How recurring injuries threaten Manchester City’s form

Most of Man City’s superstars have gotten injured this season. Erling Haaland missed two months because of an ankle problem. Versatile midfielder Bernardo Silva was not alien to injuries either. These players have returned, but missing matches in between seems to have made their form a bit sloppy. City’s attack is surely misfiring as they’ve scored just three goals in the last three matches after attempting 71 times!

Guardiola admitted his team’s struggles to convert goals. He also urged players to score more and concede less to equip themselves for the title race. The opposite of that happened in the recent games. With De Bruyne set to return, this could go as the coach insisted.
