The world stood still momentarily when Lionel Messi announced he would move to the USA. The MLS is one of the upcoming leagues in the world and often signs talented players. They signed David Beckham from Real Madrid, which turned out to be an incredible deal for Major League Soccer. Usually, washed-up players arrive at the league to have a calmer perspective of things and to escape from the hustle-bustle of intense European competition. However, Messi’s scenario is unique. Notably, he still plays soccer at a high level, and fans are excited to see him on the pitch.

In the meantime, this move doesn’t come as a surprise if you turn the clock back to five years. When Beckham unveiled the Inter Miami franchise in 2018, Messi offered him food for thought to price him away from Europe. He issued a come-get-me-plea from Europe!

In a video posted in 2018, Messi stated, “Hi David, First of all, congratulations. I wanted to wish you all the best in this new project, in this new role for you. And who knows, maybe in a few years, you can give me a ring.”

In 2018, he played for Barcelona as the club won La Liga but got knocked out in the semi-finals of the Champions League. At that moment, David Beckham revealed his new franchise after having the option of buying it for $25 million. Everyone knew he was getting into a new role, and soccer celebrities wished him well.

After joining LA Galaxy in 2007, a clause in his contract helped him to receive an option to purchase an MLS franchise. He then joined hands with two entrepreneurs who were brothers, Jorge Mas and Jose Mas, who became majority owners. To get an MLS team now, one must pay millions to purchase a soccer club. Although there is no concrete confirmation of the percentage Beckham owns, he is vital to the club’s success. The brand value he carries with him is staggering.

The offer Messi received from Inter Miami draws the limelight to the earlier Nike deal with Michael Jordan. The legendary basketball player received a cut from all Nike sales of his brand, Air Jordan. Similarly, Messi would receive a sum between $125 million and $150 million according to his contract. He would also receive bonuses for Apple’s coverage of MLS, as well as, merchandising income from Adidas’ jersey sales.
