Hours ago, Arsenal played their Premier League fixture against Luton Town. In another nail-biter, the Gunners managed to clinch an enthralling 3-4 victory at Kenilworth Road. As the soccer fraternity continues to talk about the emphatic match, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has been criticized for getting caught in the goalkeeping situation.

But simultaneously, the former Manchester City assistant coach has been praised for doing things like league winners do.

Arsenal and Luton Town’s seven-goal thriller became a topic of discussion at ESPN FC’s newsroom among the panel of Dan Thomas, Shaka Hislop, Nedum Onuoha, and Steve Nicol. Interestingly, Thomas asked everyone’s thoughts on the game, to which Nicol gave a candid response.

He said, “I mean, there’s pretty much two things in my head right now and the first one is that this is what title winners do. They get themselves in a bad situation and somehow claw their way out of it and there’s no question that’s exactly what Arsenal did.” The pundit then took a dig at Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya, claiming he’s making mistakes in all the games.

“Sometimes he [Raya] gets away with it and today he didn’t get away with it. So, Mikel Arteta has got himself in a ripe pickle because, with every mistake, it’s making the things that Arteta was saying about the goalkeeping situation ridiculous,” he added. Notably, Raya has conceded 10 goals in 10 games and has managed to keep just four clean sheets.

Raya will certainly look to improve. But let’s dive deeper to see how Arsenal went to the top of the table with this win.

Gabriel Martinelli opened the account for Arsenal in the 19th minute but was equalized by Gabriel Osho’s header from the corner. Interestingly, just before halftime, another Gabriel came to the rescue of Arsenal as Jesus scored from Ben White’s cross. Just minutes after the second half began, Luton equalized from another corner, courtesy of Elijah Adebayo.

Things went downhill for Arsenal as Raya failed to save Ross Barkley’s left-foot finish, which kept the Hatters at the front. Yet, that didn’t stop the Gunners, as Kai Havertz spoiled Luton’s party. As if the match wasn’t dramatic enough, Declan Rice sealed the victory for Arsenal with his brilliant header. Notably, the win keeps them at the top with a five-point lead.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
