Emma Hayes hasn’t officially started her tenure as the USWNT coach. Yet, the expectations are sky-high for the highest-paid women’s soccer coach in the world. With 20-plus years of experience, Emma has racked up 15 trophies in her managerial career so far. Hence, the popular belief is that she can take the American women’s team to the next level with her coaching philosophy. This is the opinion shared by a USMNT icon as well, while he presented the US Soccer Wish List in 2024.

Emma Hayes is expected to link up with her new side following the conclusion of the Women’s Super League season in May. Her first major assignment will be the 2024 Olympic games and the manager will have 2 matches each in June and July to adapt and settle down with the team. However, she has already started supplying her input.

USMNT legend, Alexi Lalas has a no-nonsense approach when it comes to soccer. The 1995 US Soccer Player of the Year has a winning mentality and outlined what he wants to see from Emma Hayes. He said, “I hope she comes in and cleans the house.” He also added, “There is a new sheriff in town and I want to see it and feel it with the US women’s national team.” Judging by these words, it seems Lalas is not impressed with their recent performances.

The USWNT is ranked second in the world and has faced just a single defeat in their last 11 games. However, they had a World Cup to forget after getting knocked out in the round of 16 by Sweden via a penalty shootout. This was a bitter blow to the 2019 World Champions and resulted in plenty of backlash.

Firstly, Sophia Smith has moved from winger to striker. Despite being one of the best strikers in the NWSL, Sophia was primarily used on the wing in the national team, with Alex Morgan playing the number 9. Another interesting change was that the team used a formation with 3 center backs. The team shape constantly changed when in possession and while defending.

Also, Emily Fox who used to play full-back is now used in a centre-back role. The star is one of the best ball progressors on the side and this change highlights her qualities even more. Lastly, it looks like 19-year-old star Jaedyn Shaw is set to be handed key offensive responsibilities factoring in her creativity.

One take at a time

Soccer was the first sport I played in my life. It turned out to be my favorite one by an absolute mile. In my younger days, I became a Liverpool fan but it was only when Jurgen Klopp arrived that my passion for the game intensified.
