It has been a dream start for the Patrick Mahomes-backed KC Current in the 2024 NWSL. Firstly, the Current opened their campaign in the $117 million CPKC Stadium. It is the first-ever sporting arena in the US, built exclusively for women. Thereafter, Kansas City won all three games they have played so far to top the NWSL table. Fueling the chivalrous ride, the 3x Super Bowl champion and his wife Brittany Mahomes have been on the courtside to cheer for the Current in crucial clashes. Thanks to this commitment, NWSL chief Jessica Berman feels the Mahomes family’s interest in the Current is quite ‘different’ and ‘authentic.’

In a recent sit-down with ESPN, Jessica Berman touched upon many factors that contribute to the NWSL’s northward journey. She began by speaking about Patrick and Brittany Mahomes’ contributions to the KC Current. “It isn’t just that they are these celebrities who are interested in investing in the NWSL. But they have an authentic connection. Take Patrick Mahomes for example. His wife Brittany was an incredible college soccer player and that makes the investment feel different. We’re not the only league that has athletes and celebrities investing in them. But for us it really does feel authentic and genuine,” said Jessica Berman.

She added, “They show up at the games and they are watching and they are cheering. They are loving it. I think that’s why you’re seeing it transcend the fan experience.” While celebrating KC Current’s 5-4 home opener win, Patrick Mahomes said that the CPKC Stadium offered the same vibes as the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium. “It’s been remarkable to be in this stadium and see the fans. I feel like I’m at Arrowhead,” the reigning Super Bowl champion said. Now, let’s see since when the Mahomes family has been contributing to the KC-based women’s soccer side.

When did Patrick Mahomes buy into KC Current?

Brittany Mahomes played collegiate soccer at the University of Texas, Tyler. She never left her love for the beautiful game behind after this storied NCAA stint. Brittany joined Angie and Chris Long as KC Current’s owners in 2020. Later, in 2023, Brittany and the Longs welcomed Patrick Mahomes into the KC Current’s ownership group. The Current is the third Kansas City-based pro team Patrick Mahomes has invested in. He has earlier invested in MLB’s Kansas City Royals and the MLS’ Sporting Kansas City.

Now as a co-owner of the Current, Mahomes aspires to bring Taylor Swift to the stands to watch the KC-based team in action. He stressed that the pop superstar is a KC Current supporter and hence it won’t be long before she sets foot on the CPKC stadium. Hence, as Berman rightly pointed out, the Chiefs QB is truly fuelling the popularity of the NWSL with his wholehearted efforts.
