Unlike this era, Wrexham was once a dominating force in the world of soccer. Reigning from Wales, the ever-famous soccer club was quite used to competing in Europe back then. Today, we roll back the calendar to 1990. Welsh soccer legend, Brian Flynn was the narrator of this lovely throwback story of how he once advised the manager of Manchester United about a young soccer star.

In a recent interview, he revealed how he helped Sir Alex Ferguson sign an upcoming legend. At that time, the Welsh soccer club was competing in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup.

Wrexham was preparing to face Lyngby in the First Round. Fortunately, Lyngby was facing Brondby before them in their soccer league. Flynn flew down to watch the game live. After returning, Sir Alex Ferguson had a serious chat with him about signing one of the club’s greatest players of all time.

Flynn played a role in shaping the history of Manchester United!

Back in 1990, Wrexham was gearing up to face Lyngby in the First Round of the UEFA Cup Winners Cup. Flynn decided to watch one of Lyngby’s games in person. The Danish soccer club was facing its rival Brondby, days before the fixture with Wrexham. After Flynn returned from his trip, someone from his office informed him that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to speak to him.

In an interview with the Fearless in Devotion – Wrexham AFC podcast, he said, “So I ring Alex up, he said, ‘All right, how was your trip, Brian?’. I didn’t know he knew that I was in Copenhagen”. Flynn then responded, “It went really well. Lyngby are a very good side. I don’t think we’ll have much chance against them but we’ll do our best”.

Ferguson then revealed the main purpose of having the conversation with him. Flynn continued, “And he said, ‘How did the young Brondby goalkeeper do?’. Oh, he was brilliant Alex. He made some saves … That’s how much research Alex did. He knew everything. He obviously had a scout at that game, who recognized me”.

Interestingly, the ‘young Brondby goalkeeper’ was none other than Peter Schmeichel. Trusting Flynn’s words, Sir Alex Ferguson went on to sign the Denmark goalie and the rest is history. He made 386 appearances for the club and kept 174 clean sheets while establishing himself as one of their best ever goalkeepers.

Surprisingly, the Welsh soccer club emerged victorious against Lyngby! They then coincidently went on to face Manchester United. Let’s dive deeper into their run in the tournament.

As Brian Flynn mentioned in the interview above, he wasn’t very confident prior to the Lyngby game. But the Reds kept themselves in the fixture till the very end. Over the two legs, the Welsh underdogs managed to scrape a 1-0 victory! After holding onto a nervy goalless draw in the first leg, Flynn and his side were aware that an upset could be in the making.

And that is exactly what the soccer universe witnessed! In the second leg, Chris Armstrong scored the first and last goal of the fixture in the tenth minute. Wrexham won the tie against Lyngby and then went on to face Manchester United. But their celebrations were cut short as Sir Alex Ferguson’s team comprehensively beat them 3-0 and 2-0 respectively over two legs.

In fact, United won the competition by beating FC Barcelona 2-1 in a nail-biting final.
