Wrexham AFC has become the definition of success. Over the last few years, the Welsh club has witnessed significant growth on and off the pitch. It, undeniably, would not have been possible without the presence of two revered names in Hollywood: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Ever since these two actors made their $2.5 million investment as co-owners, the Red Dragons’ fortunes have changed remarkably, including the production of ‘Welcome to Wrexham.’

In fact, the voyage from the Tier 5 English soccer league to the EFL Football League Two was nothing short of a dramatic movie. Luckily, the club managed to document its emphatic journey in the form of multiple documentary episodes under the name ‘Welcome to Wrexham.’ So far, two seasons have been released of the FX documentary. But news came that now the club’s docuseries is set for a renewal of a third season.

While there is much anticipation for the upcoming season, questions start to pop up in the minds of ardent fans. What will the third installment feature be? Will it be yet another success? Let’s dive deeper to answer all these queries.

A look back at previous seasons: so far, so good

Sports documentaries have become relatively mainstream in the past few years, especially with soccer. When they announced the brand new season of Welcome to Wrexham, it did not come as a surprise. But for a National League club, it definitely was. Regardless, the documentary managed to outperform in all aspects. The first season spotlighted the club’s failures, as they missed out on promotion by an inch.

Yet, fans loved it, and its numbers are enough to back that fact. The first season garnered Reynolds’ side a whopping $9.5 million in profit. Not only did it become one of the most-watched shows, but it also received six Emmy nominations. It also infinitely garnered a global audience that somehow became emotionally invested in the club and its loyal fanbase.

Correspondingly, after they gained their historic promotion to the EFL League Two, the club released the second installment. While there are no exact numbers, season two is also performing well. The fans have been reminiscing about the title-deciding games from the last season. Now that they are in EFL League Two, what can we expect in the third season, given that its renewal has already been announced? In fact, what are the ingredients that the directors could use to make it yet another hit?

How will Welcome to Wrexham season 3 become a great success?

Interestingly, there are a lot of elements that can easily make Welcome to Wrexham season 3 a remarkable success. First is, of course, underscoring the leading factor: EFL after a 15-year exile. Surely, it has been one of the finest achievements of Reynolds and McElhenney so far. Additionally, we are not even at the halfway point of the season; yet it has already been quite a rollercoaster ride for the Red Dragons. Winning the League Two or promotion would be a cherry on top for season 3.

As of now, they are tussling with the top five sides in League Two to cement their position for promotion. Moreover, the new signings can prove another favorable point. This year, Phil Parkinson’s side bolstered their squad with distinct signings from the Championship and League One. Also, the highlight of their window is the signing of Arsenal youngster Arthur Okonkwo.

Undoubtedly, the Gunners fanbase would be eager to see how their young academy product is doing at the Racecourse Ground. The 21-year-old luckily arrived as veteran Ben Foster unexpectedly retired. There you go, another behind-the-scenes look to showcase Ben Foster’s exit.

Speaking of the Premier League, Wrexham’s US Tour is one of the biggest highlights of their new campaign. A lot of drama unfolded in the four friendly fixtures against Chelsea, Manchester United, LA Galaxy II, and Philadelphia Union II. The spectacle reminds us of the heartbreaking injury that Wrexham star Paul Mullin suffered in the United clash. Certainly, American audiences would be keen to relive the days when their beloved club was in the States.

A-listers at Racecourse and the absence of Ryan Reynolds provide a good subplot!

In the first two years, Reynolds has been quite omnipresent at his beloved club, be it cheering from the stands or making usual visits to training grounds. However, the year 2023 bombarded the Canadian superstar with off-site work, primarily his commitments while filming Deadpool 3. The Aviation Gin owner was forced to leave his Wrexham duties and shoot the sequel to his franchise movie.

Hence, it would be interesting to see how Reynolds would have juggled Deadpool shooting and club duties in the show. As the season continues, it remains to see how Parkinson’s side performs without his presence. However, his absence does not mean it took away the Hollywood spark from Wrexham. As multiple A-listers have graced the Racecourse Ground previously, Hugh Jackman arrived with much fanfare.

Perhaps we will get to see other Hollywood stars who could follow suit. Remarkably, Taylor Swift is also rumored to visit Wrexham, which will be enormous for the club and the documentary. Plus, Swift would not be alone, as she will probably have the company of NFL star Travis Kelce. We can imagine the scenes when the new couple in town cheers for Reynolds’ beloved club. Indeed, it would be a fusion of a multiverse of sports and celebrities that provides a solid narrative for season three!
