The 2024 NWSL season is underway, and what better way to see so much advancement in just a season? Having a larger audience with a bigger broadcasting deal and the introduction of VAR are just a few changes. However, one change that may dishearten the fans is the retirement of legends, including Sam Mewis. Anyhow, despite a premature retirement, Mewis is now catering to the fans with her expertise. And the former North Carolina Courage star has given her verdict of who among Sophia Smith, Lynn Williams, and Alex Morgan would become the NWSL MVP this year.

Mewis had to unfortunately retire from all forms of professional soccer due to a long-term knee injury. Nevertheless, she still shows her love for the sport and her former teammates. The 31-year-old star snubbed legend Alex Morgan and Sohpia Smith to predict Lynn Williams as the potential NWSL MVP for this year. Speaking to the Women’s Game podcast, Mewis said, “I’m going with Lynn Williams. I played more soccer with Lynn Williams than probably anybody else. I’ve seen her turn it on before,” backing her former club mate to ace the game.

Mewis and Williams twinned at three clubs: Western New York Flash, North Carolina Courage, and Kansas City Current. Hence, the former USWNT star is confident that Williams has the potential to go for it. Mewis further said, “When Lynn is in scoring form, she’s unstoppable. She is one of the fastest players on the team. She can set herself up, she can just win the ball off a defender and set herself up to score,” explaining on why she chose the Gotham FC Superstar. Williams moved to Gotham FC last year from Kansas City and scored eight goals and provided three assists in 22 games.

Moreover, Mewis feels that William’s stint with the champions will be more fruitful as she will have more quality players to assist her. The current champions have players like Midge Pruce and Crytal Dunn, who can combine well with Williams and aid her to win the MVP this season, which she already did in 2015. Furthermore, Mewis admitted that their friendship is also a major factor in supporting the striker.

Meanwhile, both Lynn and Mewis are claimed to be the best friends. Both players hosted the podcast named Snacks talking about the league and its players. Nevertheless, she bravely skipped her former national teammates, Alex Morgan and Sophia Smith, this season. Morgan, on the other hand, cannot keep her heroics aside. The San Diego Wave star has taken her team to glory in the Challenge Cup this year, scoring in the dying minutes. She also took Wave to their first even Shield last year with seven goals and five assists.

On the other hand, Sophia Smith was the top scorer in 2023 with eleven goals and five assists but could not win a title. Nonetheless, Mewis chose to go with the Williams, who will have tough competition from the other rivals.
