In the 43 encounters, USWNT had faced just a solitary defeat against Mexico. Against all odds, Mexico rose to the occasion in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup as they beat their neighbors 2-0. The result was no fluke, as USWNT icon Ali Krieger highlighted Mexico’s ‘mentality’ in obtaining the result. But what ultimately made the difference on the pitch was Mexico’s defensive intensity.

However, despite the defeat, USWNT will progress to the RO16, albeit in 2nd place in their group. Following the highs of two consecutive wins, they have been given a stark reminder that they are far from the complete unit.

After watching the game, Ali Krieger was quite impressed with how Mexico defended as a team. In the post-match show, she described the showing, “I wrote down solid, organized & relentless. At defending, you could tell that they were hunting in packs. They wanted it, and that was the difference tonight. I think the mentality plays a huge part in that.” And it’s hard to disagree with the USWNT legend here.

The Mexican back-line of Espinoza, Bernal & Ferral had an imperious game. The USWNT, despite having 62% of the possession, was reduced to just 7 shots in total. Not an easy feat when you consider that the team boasts of players like Trinity Rodman, Alex Morgan, and Sophia Smith. While Mexico’s defenders were the star of the show, their USWNT counterparts had a game to forget.

Becky Sauerbrunn lost possession and was made to pay the price by Lizbeth Ovalle. However, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher could have done much better despite coming off the line. The game was a reminder that USWNT are not the same force they once were in the CONCACAF and Alex Morgan seems to agree.

Alex Morgan came on as a substitute but couldn’t make the desired impact. She also spoke about the improved competitive levels in the CONCACAF tournament. She explained, “CONCACAF is not what it was 14 years ago when we had our last loss against Mexico.” However, unlike Ali Krieger, Morgan felt that it was not Mexico’s defense, but the USWNT’s finishing skills that cost them the game.

Alex Morgan detailed, “I think we found some pockets here and there but not nearly enough, didn’t execute on the chances we had. I don’t think we tested the goalkeeper.” With just a shot on goal, Alex Morgan’s claim is true to an extent. Yet, despite the loss, the 218 cap international, has urged the team to look forward.
