They were saved by the goalpost in the final minute of the match as Ana Capeta’s shot thankfully hit the woodwork keeping the USWNT’s three-peat hopes alive.

American soccer fans, as expected, were disappointed after surviving this major scare. They took their disappointment to social media and expressed it unabashedly. Among many, soccer legend, Alexi Lalas, also expressed his thoughts on the entire ordeal.

The first half of USA vs Portugal failed to live up to its expectations. The American team surprisingly started off with sloppy passes and shots off-target. After a shocking first-half performance, USMNT legend, Alexi Lalas, made a scathing commentary on the first 45.

“After that, the USWNT owes America 45 minutes of sleep.” – criticized Alexi. Then started the second half which went similar to the first albeit with the Portuguese more threatening this time! The US Women’s team were luckily saved by the woodwork or else it would’ve been curtain call for them.

Last night USWNT made history, not in the best manner, by not topping their group in the first round of the World Cup since 2011. This is also the first time that the US women’s team has managed to win only one match in the group stage.

Co-captain Alex Morgan also acknowledged these stats and accepted that their campaign has been underwhelming so far. “It’s tough to be second. We wanted to go through [in] first [place]. This team gave everything; we just didn’t put the ball in the back of the net…We just had to get the result and move on and now we look forward,” said Morgan.
