On the back of a lower-than-expected group finish, the USWNT is now pitted against Colombia in the QFs of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup. Similar to the US team, Colombia also settled for a 2nd-seeded finish in their group. The quarterfinal could be a heavy challenge for USWNT, considering Colombia ran deeper in last year’s FIFA World Cup. However, having scored nine goals in two matches, the USA boasts a better goal tally than their QF rival. It was a couple of friendly matches when the two teams met last. Now they are caught up in a winner-takes-all situation.

They played friendlies in October. The first match ended in a goalless draw. Meanwhile, the US outclassed Colombia in the second with a 3-0 scoreline. Colombia looks for revenge, and what stage is sweeter than a knockout game?

As has been the case in the last three matches, veterans such as Alex Morgan would likely come off the bench to aid USWNT’s scoring. Now, let’s look at the Colombian team.

As of now, the Colombia team is not nursing any injuries. Colombia’s only concerns remain in the midfield, as they missed their starter Daniela Montoya in the game against Puerto Rico. Nonetheless, Montoya is expected to resume action against USWNT.

Sunday’s quarterfinal clash at the BMO Stadium, LA, will be the 13th meeting between the US and the Colombian teams. The USWNT has a spectacular advantage against Colombia in those matches. USWNT won 10, drew 2, and lost none of those 12 games. Anyhow, these 12 games include friendlies. The two teams have met only 4 times in a competitive game. The US won three times and drew once against Columbia.

Predictions

The USWNT houses star forwards such as Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, and Alex Morgan. Meanwhile, rising superstar Linda Caicedo leads Colombia’s potent gameplay. We expect a tight game. But considering the US’ home advantage, we predict the USWNT to win 1-0 against Colombia.
