“We Have to Improve” – Despite Lionel Messi ’s Heroics in Dallas, Inter Miami Boss Unsatisfied With the Performance

Inter Miami eked out a win over their rivals to stay alive in the Leagues Cup. Fans and the Herons were ecstatic with Lionel Messi’s performance yet again in the exciting match that was decided on penalties. Despite the win, the head coach was not satisfied with the team and slammed them for the sloppy play in the cup tie.

The Herons were facing a two-goal deficit in the 80th minute against FC Dallas and it seemed like they were on the verge of defeat. Beckham’s side would have been actually eliminated from the Leagues Cup last night if it wasn’t for Lionel Messi’s late intervention. In the post-match interview, Gerardo Martino acknowledged the team’s defensive flaws and room for improvement in the upcoming fixtures.

Inter Miami narrowly defeated The Toros in a thrilling penalty shootout after the match was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation time. Tata Martino was pleased with the team’s forwards’ ability to create chances and also concerned about the defensive inability to protect the goal. The coach knew The Herons need to be more consistent if they want to be successful in the remaining fixtures.

He also remarked about Miami FC, “A game that we were trailing 4-2 until the 80th minute. Obviously, we are very happy to end it this way. However, this can’t make us lose sight of all the things we have to improve”.

The team’s reliance on Lionel Messi to bail them out could be an issue for Inter Miami if their structural play does not improve in both halves. Head coach Martino hailed Messi’s impact against FC Dallas but urged the team to tighten up their tactical organization in the upcoming fixtures to maintain their winning streak in the Leagues Cup.

The 7-time Ballon d’Or winner had already become Inter Miami’s top scorer in 2023, scoring seven goals in just four games in the Leagues Cup. Lionel Messi scored twice to help Inter Miami defeat FC Dallas in the Leagues Cup. The Herons won the match with a 5-3 victory in penalties with the Argentine scoring a free kick in the 85 minute that was similar to his debut goal against Cruz Azul.

Lionel Messi scored his first goal of the game with a left-footed shot from outside the penalty area, assisted by Jordi Alba. This goal was reminiscent of their scoring together for Barcelona in the El Clásico, back in 2017. The crowd of 19,096 at Toyota Stadium erupted in cheers when La Pulga curled the ball into the left corner of the net to draw the match 4-4 in the stipulated time. Meanwhile, Inter Miami would be looking to keep their winning streak alive when they face the winner between Houston Dynamo and Charlotte FC in their upcoming fixtures.
