“Where Was Leon Edwards?”- Joey Barton Complains Against Mary Earps Becoming BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023

Joey Barton has controversial views on the involvement of female pundits in men’s soccer. Despite the criticism on social media, the former English midfielder has stood firm. Now, he has found himself in another controversy as vents his reservations against Mary Earps becoming BBC Sports Personality of the Year over Leon Edwards.

England women’s star goalkeeper, Earps, received massive praise in the 2022 Women’s FIFA World Cup for her performances. The team, nevertheless, lost 1-0 against Spain in the final.

Back home, however, Earps is receiving some recognition. BBC awarded her the Sports Personality of the Year 2023. Former Newcastle United legend Joey Barton congratulated her first. However, he later criticized the decision and felt Leon Edwards was snubbed. He posted on Twitter, “Where was Leon Edwards on the BBC Sports Personality shortlist? Surely he deserves to be on the list. World Champion in UFC Beating Usman. P4P at the time.”

In his next series of tweets, he also slammed BBC for not considering the snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan and Italian jockey Frankie Dettori. These tweets were met with both support and criticism for the former midfielder. This is not the first time Joey Barton has received criticism. He has stirred up social media by saying that women pundits should not be involved in men’s soccer.

 

Several soccer fans spoke out against the opinion of Joey Barton. They felt that Mary Earps was the deserved winner. However, the 41-year-old claimed that he would score 100 out of 100 penalties against her.

Joey Barton was also criticized by the new USA women’s soccer manager

After his views of female pundits not deserving to comment on the men’s games, Emma Hayes criticized Barton for his stance. However, Barton did not agree with her comments. But, he did invite the star manager for a debate on the issue.

The former Magpies midfielder invited her for a debate on the podcast. He further said, “Emma has a fantastic voice. One of the very best in women’s football. Have enormous respect for her. She can come on the podcast hopefully and help us all further the discussion.”
